What were birthdays before Facebook? A lot lamer! Never before Facebook did I receive dozens upon dozens of birthday wishes, including lovely verses from a poem posted by my favorite teacher from high school (hi Mrs. Augustyn!) and helpful reminders, like from Dan, who congratulated me on being almost halfway to 60. (Yesterday was the big 2-9.)
Also, before Facebook, casually and tactfully asking a bunch of friends to bring baked goods and delicacies like sausage rotel dip in your honor to your church small group was darn near impossible. Now, all it takes is a few clicks of a mouse, and you can shill for edible gifts with ease! Not that I did that.
(But thanks to everyone who brought those delicious brownies, blueberry cobbler, sausage rotel dip and chips, and crock-pot meatballs. I'm truly humbled that you guys not only remembered my b-day of your own accord, but thoughtfully brought gifts of calories to your b-day-pregnant-girl friend. I myself couldn't have come up with a better way to honor me!)
Even my dad got in on the baked goods action and made me my favorite lemon bars (Ina Garten's). Mom, who doesn't cook, offered to take me shopping on Saturday. She said I could choose anything I wanted that was $5 or less. How generous!
Ethan is really desperate to buy me jewels, but seeing as nobody has any money to fund that little venture, I was happy to hear my favorite joke of his several times throughout the day.
Ethan: Knock knock.
Me: Who's there?
Ethan: Naked.
Me: ... Naked who?
Ethan: Naked grandma!
Doesn't get much better than that. Actually, it does. I also snapped this pic of him yesterday:
