Today I read an article entitled "Curses! Why Bad Words Feel So Good to Say," which explained that saying culturally taboo words activates the same fight-or-flight portion of the brain that releases adrenaline. Apparently, according to studies, cursing is an effective form of pain management.
So that time when I was in labor and asked "Where the h*ll is the g*dd*mn doctor?" [see footnote] it was an instinctual act of self-medication (and genius, if you ask me).
But seriously, who makes a fully dilated and effaced woman wait FIFTEEN MINUTES to push? My g#d#mn [see footnote] L&D nurses, I guess.
*e, o, a
Funny you should say - I've been meaning to talk to you about some words you've been throwing around lately that you certainly didn't learn at home - not very ladylike I have to say.
Can you post a link to the article? A friend of mine's husband was recently in a tragic work accident that resulted in brain damage. He was cussing like a sailor once he came out of the coma, which was something he never did before. I'm sure she would be interested in the article as well.
I saw that study as well. I am thinking the parents are getting the soap ready for you at next sighting.
Hilarious. I read this article too the other day.
i remember learning D*mm*t and oh my G*D instead of Gosh in kindergarten and tried them out when I came home. I had to bite down on a bar of soap for a whole 2 minutes!! Needless to say, I'm not a cusser. However, having children makes me want to cuss. Often.
Oh, and I got smacked in the mouth for saying "shut up" as well.
Hah! No wonder I swear like a sailor.
Anonymous Mum—What can I say? It's all these dirty mouthed cops I've been hanging around with.
Sterling—the article title is linked, but here it is just in case: www.divinecaroline.com/22312/79426-curses--words-say
Mrs. Fuzz—I remember when "butt head" was a banned expression in my house (I learned it by watching The Wonder Years).
i had this article quoted on the side of my blog for a bit because i loved it so much
Funny stuff. Good writing.
